Anchorage (USA) – Melting of arctic glaciers that is commonly seen as an adverse effect of the global warming has at least one positive effect. Due to the melting, scientists can execute their long-impracticable plan – establish a deep-sea cable connection between Tokyo and London.
According to the CEO of Kodiak-Kenai Cable company (based in Alaska) Walt Ebbel, the main aim of the project is to higher connection speed between those two regions of the world. The cable will be led the shortest way through the Arctic Ocean and should accelerate information flow at which, especially in the financial world, milliseconds are decisive.
“Speed is the basic” stated Ebbel. “In that way, we can shorter ping from 140 milliseconds to 88.” The project is still fumbling with loads of technical glitches, but also indicates, how the physique of the land has been changing in the last few years. The melting of glaciers forced American conservationists to add polar bear on the Red list of threatened species.
A new north traffic route, that has been fascinating many adventurers for years, has been opened die to the melting. Laying the cable on the ocean bottom without using heavy icebreakers is a new option for technicians.
The biggest hitch of the project is its price though. “Truly, it is not an inexpensive matter”, noted Ebbel. Costs should reach 1.2 billion dollars. Building up the optic connection between Japan and the west coast of the USA, which will be put into operation next month, came the company out for 300 million dollars.
The new optic line will be 16 000 km long and will be led from Japan through the Aleutian Islands and through quite shallow waters of the Bering Sea. On the north of Alaska, it will need a so-called regeneration station to amplify its signal and then it will spin round Greenland across the north of the Atlantic Ocean straight to London. The Kodiak-Kenai Cable Company is going to bring out an extension to the east coast of the USA and thus connect high speed net to New York.
